Rajasthan, India, is home to one of the largest and most visually stunning stepwells in the world. The landmark is called Chand Baori which contains a series of symmetrical, dual-sided mini-staircases made up of 3,500 steps leading down 13 stories, or about 65 feet.
Three sides of the well have the geometric stair structures while the fourth features a three-story pavilion and balconies which all contain ornate carvings and sculptures.
The reservoir was built in the 8th or 9th century to store water for the city which is historically dry in climate. After the structure was stopped being used for water purposes, it became a place for locals to cool off since the bottom is noticeably cooler than the top; it has also been featured in movies.
The complex was reportedly built as a dedication to the goddess of happiness and joy.
