The tranquil Uksan village in Kamshet will come alive this weekend with a residency programme organised in the outdoors. On the itinerary is Shakti in Motion, a workshop hosted by German dancer-choreographer Maria Schneiders. This session, which is a part of The Company Theatre (TCT)'s Weekend@workspace initiative, is open only to women.

"We started the weekend residency programme in April. The space is open for everything that qualifies as art. And by that, we don't just mean the performing arts. It could even include photography, or an Ayurvedic cooking weekend," says Titas Dutta, who manages creative programming for the workspace, which otherwise offers theatre, dance and music artistes a place to rehearse and hone their craft. It is also one of the world's few crowd-funded artiste centres, with contributions from theatre artistes and the fine arts community.

The space provides the perfect balance between work and leisure. "It is in the midst of nature, which gives people a chance to get out of the city and experience some peace and quiet," says Dutta.

It features an indoor studio, a semi-indoor studio, as well as an open stage outside. Curating the weekend programmes is not an easy task. "My research team and I are constantly on the lookout for interesting practitioners. We only approach them once we figure out if they fit into what we're trying to achieve at the workspace," she adds.

Schneiders is one such practitioner, whose dance programme is about feminine energy. "The aim is to help each woman connect with her wild side, her emotions and her strengths," she says.

A Berliner, Schneiders has been fascinated with India for a very long time. She combines somatic practices and training to help women open up their bodies using specific exercises.
